24/7 Public washrooms in Downtown Guelph

One of the problems in having a vibrant entertainment scene in Downtown Guelph, is the lack of public washrooms. When you gotta go, you gotta go. This has been expressed by many customers, merchants and visitors to Downtown over the years.

Two solutions to this problem are being considered:

With the proposed construction of the new transit hub on Carden Street, redesign of the public square in front of the new City Hall and the development of the Baker Street parking lot into a mixed use facility, an excellent opportunity presents itself to integrate into the design, a public washroom that is accessible to all at any time of the day.

The other consideration is for several stand alone units located throughout the Downtown.

These outdoor units which come in many designs and sizes, are currently being used throughout Europe and North America .

The automated public toilets that have been installed in Vancouver are self-contained and following each use, are automatically cleaned, disinfected and dried. Green cleaning products are used. They are provided at no cost to the municipality and are funded through advertising. The municipality will have to provide water and waste water service to the site which, depending on the location, can be in the $20-$40,000 range.        Ian
