#6. Pissoirs

All week the staff at the ward 2 blog will be posting our top ten blog entries as determined by our editors.

Although we tried to focus on Ward 2 specific topics, some of the issues have a community wide interest.

#6. Pissoirs in Downtown. Where do you go when you hafta go?

Councillors have received many complaints from business owners about the fouling of our streets and alley in Downtown. Many blame the proliferation of bars. Others the lack of public facilities.

The Nightlife Task Force recommended to City Council, a 2 month pilot project to test Guelph’s acceptance of pissoirs to help alleviate this problem.

As Council’s representative on the Task Force, I received much of the public’s initial displeasure at the thought of the idea. However, once the pissoirs were installed, attitudes seemed to change.

On average, the pissoirs collected 800 litres of liquid each week of the pilot, representing approximately 2000 users.
