Two sides to pesticides in Ward 6!
Two letters about pesticides from constituents in Ward 6: I am writing to you to voice my concerns about the proposed pesticide by-law in Guelph. My concerns are two-fold: Although many other municipalities have implemented or have attempted to implement such by-laws, it doesn’t mean that we need to as well. Pesticides is a hot issue […]
Ban the use of pesticides….please!
Letters to Councillors in support of banning the cosmetic use of pesticides in the City of Guelph. Firstly, I applaud your decision to finally allocate monies for education about pesticides into the current budget. The by-law that was approved in principle by the previous council is weak. It would be extremely difficult to enforce, and […]
Supporting the use of Pesticides
Letter to Mayor and Council: I was very disappointed, but not overly surprised, to read in the Apr 3rd. issue of the Guelph Tribune, that Guelph city-council plan on having an out right ban on pesticide usage for residential lawns. I wonder if this decision was a political one or a scientific one. My guess […]
“Tyrannical” Pesticide By-law
I am outraged at the direction the city council is taking on the pesticide bylaw. The proposed bylaw is tyrannical and capricious, and I’m sick of the approach. The process being used is far worse than the bylaw. We had a huge public debate on this last time, and this time it is just being […]
How to kill pests without killing yourself.

Soil and Pesticides
A single teaspoon of fertile soil that has compost added to it regularly contains an amazing 100million bacteria an astonishing 400 to 800ft of fungi threads (called hyphae) and millions of other microbes. Soils that receive only chemical fertilizers typically contain lower numbers of these beneficial creatures (Almanac& Pest-control Primer p41).
Termites. Those little buggers can cost us all!
Ward 2 is ground zero for termite infestation in Guelph. An infestation of termites commenced near Goldie Mill park in the 1960’s. The City enacted a Termite Control By-law and was an active participant in the provincial control program with most of the houses and other structures in the infested area chemically treated. In the […]
The case for pesticide use.
A draft pesticide bylaw was recently rejected by the Community Development and Environmental Services Committee of Council. The draft bylaw would have limited the application of pesticides in certain conditions such as if it is too windy or too hot outside. Staff were directed to return to committee with a proposal that would effectively ban the cosmetic use […]
