Downtown Guelph Seniors' Day Relaunch – May 27, 2014

DGBA press release.

Starting Tuesday May 27th, seniors who shop or dine in downtown Guelph on the LAST Tuesday of every month now qualify for discounts at over 40 of our finest businesses.

Since September 2013, the Downtown Guelph Business Association (DGBA) has been working closely with the Guelph Wellington Seniors Association (GWSA) to develop ways to recognize and thank seniors for their loyalty to downtown. Seniors out enjoying the Evergreen Centre and Old Quebec Street Shoppes were interviewed and asked to provide input on the Seniors’ Day program. Many agreed that a standard discount was more agreeable than varying offers. The DGBA took this feedback to the merchants, and, in response, more than 40 downtown businesses are now offering a 15% discount on selected merchandise and food on the LAST Tuesday of every month. To receive this discount, seniors need to show the Seniors’ Discount Card, which can be picked up at any of the participating businesses, as well as seniors’ community centres, and local doctor’s offices starting May 27th. The card will also be distributed at the Senior Games Opening Ceremony at City Hall on May 31st.

Another key component highlighted by many respondents was the need for cheaper parking. In response, the DGBA have arranged for seniors to receive $1 off parking in the Baker Street Lot and West Parkade on Seniors’ Day, simply by showing their Seniors’ Discount Card. Marty Williams, Executive Director of the DGBA , says “making parking cheaper is a great incentive to get people to come downtown and we’re delighted to be working with the City of Guelph to make this happen”.

The DGBA looks forward to continuing to welcome seniors to our Downtown for an accessible, memorable shopping experience.
