Guelph to benefit with 33 new trees

Press release.

The City of Guelph has received a donation of 33 trees and nine shrubs for its landscaping project at the Guelph Youth Music Centre.

Andrew Lambden, from Terra View Homes, and the Nicholas Lambden Memorial Children’s Foundation made the donation through the City’s
Greening Guelph
program as part of an ongoing commitment to give back to the community by enhancing Guelph’s public spaces.

Greening Guelph is a donation program to increase the green canopy in Guelph and aligns with the City’s
Urban Forest Management Plan
and
Natural Heritage System
(Official Plan Amendment 42).

“Trees, plants and shrubs are an integral part of our environment and a valuable asset to our community as they help clean the air, conserve energy, and make Guelph’s public spaces more beautiful and enjoyable. Andrew’s donation will also enhance biodiversity among tree species, and increase tree canopy throughout the site,” says Stefan Ilic, landscape technologist with the City.

Today and tomorrow, the City, tree supplier Chaplinksi Farms, and Lambden will be onsite to plant the trees and shrubs. The following week, with help from community members, the new tree and shrub plantings will get a one-time application of termite resistant pine bark nugget mulch to help establish the roots.

“Our goal, as part of the City’s site plan guidelines, is to soften the views between the parking facility and roadway to enhance aesthetics for the neighbouring residents and facility tenants,” says Ilic.

In addition to the landscaping project, five years ago Lambden worked with the City and a committee of local residents to design the music centre’s new parking lot. Part of that design included keeping a number of established trees and installing underground infiltration galleries to minimize construction disturbances in Goldie Mill Park and to protect the Speed River.

To recognize the landscaping donation, which also includes equipment and labour, the City plans to hold a tree dedication ceremony at a later date. In 2012, the City received a $400,000 donation from the Nicholas Lambden Memorial Children’s Foundation to help build the outdoor skating rink and water feature in Guelph’s Market Square.
