edward johnson school garden – donations??

hello friends and neighbours…

as spring (ahem!) approaches, myself and a few other parents who have kids at edward johnson are hatching plans for an organic teaching garden at the school.

at this point we have the okay from the principal, and are aiming to get into the ground this season.

we were hoping for a grant from toyota, but didn’t manage to get one. we have some lines on other grants, will be approaching some local businesses, and will be contacting school parents directly shortly.

at this point i thought i’d just put out the word in the neighbourhood too.

if you are interested in being a part of the garden, volunteering time or donating tools/soil/expertise please let me know. we’d love to have as many people involved as possibe, and this will be a community garden as well as a school garden.

thus far we have 2 donated rain barrels (great!), so our wish list is as follows:

volunteers! for through the year upkeep, and especially during the summer watering and upkeep untreated wood for raised beds, fencing and benches
soil
compost
rain barrel (1)
watering cans
small shed
spades
rakes
trowels
soil sifters
cultivators
stakes and tomato cages
books on gardening that could be used in the classroom
organic/heirloom plant seeds or seedlings
seating (benches)

the best way to contact me is at [email protected]

thanks!
kia

PS i hope to make it to the meeting at the elliot tomorrow (Wednesday), but if i don’t, please convey to anyone listening that i DO NOT think that cuts to services that help out the growing/aging in our community are the way to go. really, the bookmobile?
