2016 water, wastewater rates effective January 1

The 2016 rate increase amounts to an approximate increase of $31 for the average three–person household, or four per cent. This is based on the 2014 average household water consumption of 185 cubic metres for a three-person household. These rate increases were approved by Council on October 28 as part of the non-tax supported budget.

Residential water conservation efforts, an infrastructure leak detection and repair program, and wastewater optimization projects continue to contribute to lower than forecasted rate increases. This helps keep Guelph among the average for water rate charges among comparable Ontario municipalities.

The 2016 rates reflect the City’s commitment to delivering a safe and sustainable water supply and optimizing wastewater services, while renewing aging infrastructure. Funding for water and wastewater infrastructure renewal continues to be the main driver of rate increases.

Residents and businesses can decrease their water bills by reducing the amount of water they use. The City offers a variety of resources to assist residents and local businesses in conserving water and reducing water and wastewater bills.
