Boarding House OPEN STUDIO 2014 | THURSDAY, FEB 13 | 6-8pm

BOARDING HOUSE ARTS INCUBATOR

OPEN STUDIO 2014

Thursday, February 13, 6-8 pm

6 Dublin Street South, Guelph

Boarding House Arts invites the public to the Arts Incubator Open Studio 2014 – an opportunity to meet our 7 incubator artists and view their most recent work in the intimate setting of their studios.

Incubator resident artists include Whitney Arnott, Colin Carney, Annie Dunning, Monika Hauck, Gabriel Parniak, Adrienne Spier, and Rachel Vanderzwet. A selection of their art, curated by Renann Isaacs, will be on display throughout the building. Brief artist bios and sample images are attached.

The Arts Incubator is a studio residency program providing promising artists with studio space and personalized mentoring in the business of being a professional artist. Artists are selected through a competitive process in response to an annual open call for participants. The program aims to support a breadth of artistic practice ranging from media-based work to painting to socially-engaged art to photography. The concept is partially modeled on technology Incubators, such as Waterloo’s Communitech and Toronto’s MaRs Discovery District in which entrepreneurs are provided with basic office facilities and high level coaching and mentoring in order to increase their chances of success. The uniqueness of the Arts Incubator is that it not only supports each artist’s pursuit of their art practice but also emphasizes the business skills needed to pursue a viable career as a professional artist.

The Arts Incubator is up and running through a partnership between Boarding House Arts, Musagetes and the School of Fine Art and Music (SOFAM) at the University of Guelph with the additional support of the Guelph Community Foundation (Wood/Roberts Family Fund and Musagetes Fund).

Open Studio 2014 is also an opportunity to explore and interact with the new, rich, and diverse community of artists and arts organizations housed at Boarding House Arts.

Boarding House Gallery (an artistic partnership between SOFAM and the Macdonald Stewart Art Centre) will feature paintings by renowned contemporary Canadian painter Ron Shuebrook. Shuebrook is the Senior Artist in Residence at Boarding House Arts and will be in attendance.

Capacity 3 Gallery
is a new space for engaging, risk-taking and experimental contemporary art. Artist Janine Miedzik’s Zig Zag Wanderer will be the inaugural exhibit, launching the space.

Musagetes
will offer a listening session of the newly released vinyl LP Between a Rock and a Hard Place featuring recordings by 11 bands performing on 11 swatches of land in Sudbury during the summer of 2012.

Other Boarding House Arts resident artists, including Jenn E Norton, Outside-In Studio (Christine Campbell, Susie Campbell and Barb Gilmore), Martin Pearce, Emily Schaefer, and Lyn Westfall,
will share recent work in a variety of media from video to drawing to painting
.

Boarding House Arts is non-profit organization that manages the spaces in the building as well as the Arts Incubator and Studio programs. The Studio program seeks to provide affordable space within a community of practicing professional artists. A variety of strategies are being developed to promote public and critical exposure for artists in both programs.
