June 13th Parking Meeting: Some Ideas

A resident provides a perspective.

One, regarding the need for more parking in downtown. [I say need, as the population of downtown is due to increase with the addition of two or more condominiums] I would suggest adding two parking garages [3-4 levels] similar to the ones already present. For aesthetics, these could be bricked and painted to match surrounding buildings similar to the parking garage in downtown Waterloo across from the town square. Also, borrowing from my trips to Japan, why not use the top floor of these parking garages for a green space, or park, or dog walk area. I believe you will find that most top, open to the air, floors of parking garages are rarely used, so why not put them to a use. As for location, I would suggest the Baker Street parking lot, and the parking lot across from the police station on Fountain Street. There you have it, I have suggested a quadrupling of parking in downtown, and added two green spaces all in one shot. The location at Fountain Street would also add parking for visitors to the Market.

A second suggestion would be the same one I offered to you over a year ago regarding moving the parking on MacDonnell Street to the centre of the street. For this purpose I have left attached previous emails to remind you of this suggestion.

I believe I will attach at least one of this suggestions to the Parking Meeting’s page on the City’s website, but I would also greatly appreciate if you would put these suggestions forward on my behalf.JS
