Festival of Moving Media Film Lineup

THE FESTIVAL OF MOVING MEDIA IS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE OUR 2011 FILM LINE UP.
This year’s films examine our complex relationships with the world around us, whether with other animals (One Lucky Elephant, Feathered Cocaine) or with the very frontiers of human exploration (Space Tourist). Another theme of this year’s program concerns a self-examination of ideas connected to the contemporary documentary tradition itself. First, we put the spotlight on those in front of the movie screen (Cinemania). Then, by looking at the prankster/provocateur (Abel Raises Cain, Roadsworth), we highlight a central aspect of the contemporary wave of nonfiction filmmaking, in which many leading filmmakers have adopted an active/interventionist role where art and activism collide—often in radical opposition to the notion of a perspectiveless documenter.

2011has been an exciting year of development for the Festival of Moving Media. We have been working with local arts festivals to develop the Guelph Fab 5 (guelphfab5.ca). Through this initiative, we participated in a range of arts events, including the Guelph Jazz Festival’s Nuit Blanche and the Hillside Festival. We also asked local filmmakers to create five-minute films based on their interpretation of this year’s Hidden Histories theme, Secret Places. This Ed Video collaborative project has developed into a multi-year series. Lastly, we are expanding our children’s programming both within the festival and the schools. All of these initiatives are grounded in the priorities of the festival—the desire to contribute to our community, instill the love of film and develop the inquisitive mind.
