northern heights trail construction

A resident called wondering what was happening with the trail construction in the Northern Heights neighbourhood. Here is staff’s response.

To address his concern about the extent of grading, I explained that the trail contract requires re-grading of the City open space from the trail surface right up to the living fence behind some home lots on Ingram Drive to ensure that the sheet flow drainage off the lots is effectively collected in a swale all along the south side of the trail and discharged to the meadow to the north of the trail via a culvert. This is to ensure that this stonedust trail will not wash out, and that no drainage will back up onto the home lots.

The contract requires the restoration of all disturbed areas with topsoil and a wildflower seed mix which includes a vigorous cover crop of an annual seed to stabilize the area as quickly as possible after grading. Any disturbance beyond the contract limits will be at no cost to the City. I have forwarded Mark the construction drawing for his information. I have also followed up with my consultant to verify that all work is proceeding according to the approved plans.

The contractor is aiming to finish the majority of the work by about the end of next week – subject to weather and site conditions – so hopefully any resident disturbance will be quite short-lived.  Staff
