Popular children’s entertainer to perform at Mayor’s New Year’s levee

Acclaimed Canadian singer-songwriter Jack Grunsky will perform three free mini concerts during the Mayor’s second annual New Year’s levee in Market Square on Saturday, January 12.

Described by the Toronto Star as a Canadian musical treasure who “spreads toe-tapping happiness,” Grunksy is best known for his keen interest in music for children. His 13 recordings for children have received prestigious awards across North America, including four Junos. He tours extensively, performing in theatres and at international children’s festivals.

Mayor Karen Farbridge will also deliver brief remarks at 1:30 p.m. and is expected to announce the donation of a major gift to Market Square. “The generosity of many donors in our community made this wonderful public space possible. I’m pleased that one of the lead donors has extended that generosity to help us animate the space year round,” says Mayor Farbridge.

About levees
Levees originated in France and the concept of welcoming members of the public to meet and chat with public officials was adopted by government representatives across Europe. It was Canada that began the tradition of hosting a levee on New Year’s Day and elected officials from all levels of government continue the tradition.
