Should the City of Guelph pick up the clear bag on a weekly basis? A constituent asks this question:
First let me congratulate both of you on becoming councillors.
With the election of new councillors, I am hoping that our garbage collection system can be looked at. I am happy with sorting my garbage into three streams.It is the holding on to the clear bags for two weeks that bothers me. I am willing to pay more in taxes if it means that my disgusting garbage is picked up every week. Keeping the clear bag in the summer time for that additional week is bothersome. It must be kept in my garage, because there are animals in our area that would destroy it if it was left outside. So, the smell becomes very noticeable.
I would also like to see more yard waste pickups during the growing season. Again, if it means a slight tax increase, I would accept that.Regards, SR
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Thanks for your questions regarding additional residential collection services. My staff and I have been considering both service enhancements that you are requesting. I submitted a 2007 budget expansion package for the bi-weekly collection of yard waste (opposite week of clear bag collection) for Council to consider during their budget deliberations this year. The cost of providing that additional service (including capital costs) is roughly $592,000.
At this time, I am not recommending to increase clear bag collection to weekly as it would be very expensive. To provide this increased service would require the purchase of at least two new trucks and four new staff. However, if Council wishes to increase the service standard to weekly clear bag we will do so.
