Today marks the start of the 18th annual Waterloo Wellington Children’s Groundwater Festival—a week-long event dedicated to protecting and conserving water.
More than 5,000 elementary students from Guelph, Wellington county, and Waterloo region are participating in the event taking place in Kitchener at the Waterloo Regional Museum and Doon Heritage Village.
As one of the founding water festivals in Ontario, the local children’s groundwater festival puts a greater emphasis on the importance of protecting and conserving groundwater—where Guelph and most of the surrounding area gets its drinking water.
“The Festival offers a variety of hands-on educational opportunities that provide students with a solid understanding of how groundwater is a critical part of life and what they need to do to protect and conserve it,” says Susan Reid, Festival coordinator.
On VIP Day, Wednesday, May 29, the sixth annual Water Cup Challenge will be held at noon, pitting local media personalities against each other in a water trivia game. Each celebrity guest will be teamed with students from a local public school, to test their water knowledge. This event will be held at the Waterloo Region Museum.
The Festival wraps up on Saturday, June 1 with the sixth annual ECOFest at the Waterloo Region Museum. This free, family-friendly event gets underway at 9:30 a.m. and is a fun-filled day to celebrate the environment.
