Accessible parking spaces added while major retrofit of West Parkade elevator underway

Elevator #1 in the City’s West Parkade requires a major retrofit to ensure its continued safe operation. This elevator has been in use for 26 years and is near the end of its working life.

The City will contract a qualified company to retrofit the elevator and this work is expected to be complete by June.

“The City is very conscious of our responsibility to provide a safe, reliable and efficient elevator system to our customers,” said Allister McIlveen, Manager, Traffic and Parking.

Elevator #1 has been regularly maintained and repaired as needed. Built in 1985, the elevator’s original equipment has now reached its life expectancy and is due for a major retrofit. The elevator’s inner workings, including the engine and hydraulic mechanism, will be replaced. The concrete spine and the elevator car will remain.

A total of 22 accessible parking spaces will be available to West Parkade customers during the elevator retrofit – 12 temporary spaces will be added to the existing 10 spaces. Directional signage to other elevators in the West Parkade and the Old Quebec Street Mall has been provided and Parkade staff are available to support customers and answer any questions they may have.

Elevator #2 in the West Parkade will remain operational during the retrofit – transporting patrons to and from the ground floor to parking levels 4, 5 and 6 and to the second floor of the Old Quebec Street Mall. People may continue to use the fully accessible elevator located inside the Old Quebec Street Mall to reach medical offices on the second floor.

The West Parkade provides parking for visitors to the Old Quebec Street Mall, River Run Centre and Sleeman Centre.
