With more severe weather on its way to Guelph, the City is asking people be patient as Public Works crews continue clearing roads and sidewalks.
Environment Canada issued a blizzard and wind chill warning for the area. Dangerous snow squalls and extreme wind chills of minus 35 to 40 degrees Celsius are expected this evening. Anyone travelling is reminded to have sufficient fuel and a car emergency kit.
The City is asking for people’s patience and assistance in responding to this extreme weather event.
- Snow removal is underway, and residents can call 519-837-5628 to report a problem with road conditions.
- Please move parked cars off the streets to make room for snow plows, and help keep storm drains clear.
- Drive according to road conditions, pack an emergency car kit, and treat any non-functioning traffic signals like a four-way stop.
- The City will clear sidewalks as soon as possible, and your assistance is appreciated. If you’re able, please help clear sidewalks near your property, and if you require assistance (disabled or elderly) please call Snow Angels at 519-822-1155.
- Due to limited quantities of de-icing material available, residents are asked not to use the material in neighbourhood bins. Free de-icing material is available at 50 Municipal Street.
- In areas where the sidewalks have not been cleared, pedestrians and motorists are asked to take extra care to watch out for each other.
- Please place garbage carts/bags at the curb on the morning of collection rather than the night before (waste must be at the curb by 6:30 a.m.) and leave room for snow banks caused by plows. Please shovel a spot for your carts or bags, and do not place waste on top of snow banks.
- Check to make sure your 72 hour emergency kit is ready and well stocked.
- Call 911 to report downed power lines, stay clear and be patient as crews respond.
All Guelph Transit routes are running, though there may be delays due to road conditions, and all recreation programs will proceed as scheduled.
The weather is slowing efforts to clean up fallen tree limbs and branches from December’s ice storm. City-wide cleanup efforts will continue over the next eight weeks. Residents are asked to avoid treed areas in parks and trails, and bring fallen branches and trees from private properties to the Waste Resource Innovation Centre at 110 Dunlop Drive for free disposal.
