City to participate in annual Commuter Challenge

The City of Guelph and Guelph Transit are showing support for active and sustainable commuting by participating in the 2013 Commuter Challenge from June 2 to 8.
During the week-long initiative, City staff and members of the public are encouraged to choose environmentally friendly travel options such as cycling, walking, carpooling, or taking public transit.
On Clean Air Day, Wednesday, June 5, Guelph Transit is offering free transit service all day. “Guelph Transit has made a number of changes to our service over the last year, and we’d like to invite everyone to leave their cars at home and try transit for free on Clean Air Day,” says Michael Anders, general manager of Guelph Transit. “We are a connected community that benefits from a strong bike lane network and a transit system that encourages bike and bus transportation.”
The Commuter Challenge is a friendly competition between workplaces in Guelph, and is part of a national effort to reduce pollution and traffic congestion. This annual competition encourages individuals and employers to register and track the distances they travel by taking transit, participating in a carpool, riding a bicycle or walking to work during National Environment Week.
“This is your opportunity to try a new way to get to work,” notes Heather Mathewson Jelsma, one of the City’s Commuter Challenge Coordinators. “By participating in Commuter Challenge, you are making a difference in our community.”
