Costco Warehouse

I was very pleased to read in the October 30 edition of the Tribune that city planning staff are recommending that you approve Costco’s development in the west end. I think it is very important for many reasons that you approve this development. Residents of Guelph will have more choice here and reduce the need to drive to Kitchener and/or Cambridge. I personally know people who would like to work part-time, so this would obviously offer the opportunity to them and many others. And I am sure the extra tax revenue doesn’t even need to be mentioned.

It was stated in this report that “zoning regulations have been included to limit the size of both the large-format retail portion of the site and the portion of the site meant for a variety of smaller retail and service uses”. If this means that Costco will be required to downsize, I respectfully ask that you remove zoning regulations that would put limitations on the size of the warehouse. Trying to shop at Home Depot’s “downsized” store here in Guelph and invariably ending up in Kitchener is a good example and reason enough not to do that.     MC
