Email regarding City computers

I am wondering why the City of Guelph is dumping all this computer hardware when it is current and quite usable into the future?

The City of Guelph computers you see available for sale on the Web have reached the end of their usable life span in our municipal setting. These machines are utilized a minimum of 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. Many are shared computers that are staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In some instances, these machines are subject to adverse environmental conditions as they are used in ticket booths, arenas, pools and weigh stations.

The City has taken great care to establish a lifecycle replacement strategy which ensures employees have computers that function at an acceptable speed and with minimum downtime due to breakdowns. We also have a diverse and robust range of software applications installed which requires our computers to have the most recent operating systems and office suites. As a result, we are obliged to refresh our desktops and laptops every 3 or 4 years.

The systems we auction are certainly suitable for home use, but have exhausted their ability to be reliable and quick enough for professional purposes. That’s why we auction them as they can continue to be used in other settings. When sold and reused, these systems do not go to a recycling facility for a number of years. Staff
