Environment Canada has issued a Special Weather Statement indicating a prolonged heat alert is in effect for Waterloo-Wellington and Dufferin-Innisfil from Tuesday, June 19 to Thursday, June 21.
The City of Guelph reminds residents that air-conditioned community centres and libraries, as well as City Hall and Market Square’s interactive water fountain are open to residents and visitors and are great places to keep cool.
Visit guelph.ca/cooling centres for a list of locations and times City facilities are open during a heat alert.
During a heat alert, Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health advises people to:
• Stay out of the sun
• Drink lots of water
• Limit outdoor activity to morning and evening hours
• Stay in air-conditioned places
Seniors and young children are particularly at risk during heat and smog-related weather conditions. Residents are encouraged to call or visit family, friends and neighbours to make sure they are okay, especially isolated adults and seniors, who are at greater risk of suffering from heat-related illnesses.
