Notes from Operations

Please note that the 2:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. parking restriction becomes in effect on November 1.

To alert the public, radio and print ads have been set up, as well Bylaw staff will issue notices to vehicles found parked on-street during these hours this weekend. These notices will advise motorists of the parking restriction and will provide information on the City’s overnight parking exemption program. In addition, starting November 1, staff will issue warnings to vehicles found in violation of this restriction for the first 4 nights with normal enforcement commencing November 5.  Staff

With noticeably cooler temperatures and wet weather, the Autumn season has arrived in full force and Public Works is preparing for the annual Curbside Loose Leaf Collection program. The aim of this e-mail is to give you a quick snapshot on how the program will roll out this year.

Firstly, this year’s program runs from November 14 through to November 21.

The purpose of the program is to maximize leaf collection to keep roads, right of ways and drainage systems clear throughout the winter months thereby reducing drainage issues and spring clean up costs while maintaining public safety. The leaves will be diverted from landfill and disposed of through composting. Please note, the City of Guelph is pleased to provide this service however residents are encouraged to mulch their leaves and leave them on the lawn, in the garden or around trees and shrubs as excellent mulch material. The dates have been chosen based on historical weather and leaf fall patterns. Admittedly, it is more of an art than a science to time this program to maximize the leaf fall, yet not have our first snow fall. That being said, I remain confident that the dates above will provide the maximize collection efforts by city staff.

How the program works:

Residents are requested to rake leaves onto the road or curbside no more than a few days prior to November 14 in order to avoid plugging storm inlets which can result in flooding. To increase efficiency and effectiveness, the Public Works crews will pass through each street only once to collect the leaves. Therefore we ask residents to ensure their leaves are ready for collection by November 14. Residents are reminded to avoid parking on the street during this one week period to allow for visibility and accessibility to the leaves.

Loose leaf collection refers to loose leaf pick up only. Bagged leaves and bundled yard waste will be collected at the curb on regular clear waste collection days the weeks of October 31 – November 4 and November 7 – 11.  Staff
