Proposed Sikh Temple in Westminster Woods

Let me begin by stating that I am a resident of Westminster Woods whose property is within 120m of the proposed Sikh Temple. I have never been notified regarding any aspect of the re-zoning application process, and only learned of the proposal for the Temple from a friend. This is in direct violation of the City of Guelph by-laws. I find it very suspect that the City was able to locate me for tax purposes, but not to inform me of the re-zoning application.

I am opposed to having the proposed Sikh Temple built in Westminster Woods. My primary concern is the safety of the children who live in this neighbourhood. Given the square footage and estimated capacity (2 000 plus based on data from other Sikh Temples) of the proposed building, it is obvious that the 169 planned parking spaces are inadequate for an establishment of this size. Thus, hundreds of people attending the Temple will be forced to find altermative arrangements, namely parking on the streets. It is this overflow parking volume that causes me great concern.

If there are hundreds of cars parked on the streets how are people (children in particular) supposed to bicycle safely when there are no dedicated bike lanes? You should try driving down Goodwin when the bus ( or another vehicle) is coming and there are only a few parked cars – it can be hazardous. How safe do you think your child would be riding his/her bike at the same time? By my standards – not very. Having hundreds of cars parked on the major and side streets of Westminsrer Woods also represents a potential safety hazard. For instance, children trying to cross a street may not be seen by drivers due to the parked cars. The fact that the Temple is to be situated between the two new elementary schools and so close to the future sports fields and playground is in itself problematic and increases our childrens risk of being injured in accidents. It is the responsibility of the community as a whole to do everything within our power to keep our children safe.

I have several other concerns/questions about the proposed Sikh Temple being located in Westminster Woods and would appreciate a response to them:

What will become of the large trees along the fence line of the property?
If this Temple is to be a ‘sanctuary’ to all, does that include giving overnight shelter?
Would an establishment of this size not be better placed outside a family oriented neighbourhood, for example in an industrial area (as many other religion have done) given the parking requirements and the impact that the increase in traffic will have on the neighbourhood and its reseidents?
Why have no studies been undertaken to assess the impact that the proposed Temple would have on Westminster Woods? For example, overflow parking, traffic volume increase, noise increase due to traffic.
Do homeowners/residents get priority for street parking (closest to their homes) for their guests?
Why was I not properly notified of the re-zoning application?
Why are there no designated bicycle lanes in Westminster Woods?

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter and to hopefully respond to the questions/issues I have raised. I am opposed to the Sikh Temple being situated in Westminster Woods as I believe it would jeopardize the health and safety of the residents of this neighbourhood, particularily the children. Please help us to keep our children safe and secure in their own neighbourhoods.MT
