Sikh Temple

I am moving my family from Toronto to a wonderful new home in Westminster Woods at the corner of Tolton and Clair.

At the time we purchased our home we were told by Reids Heritage Homes the land where the Sikh temple is proposed was to be used for a Senior’s residence. I understand the land has since been sold by Extendicare to the Sikh Society of Guelph who wish to build a temple open 24/7.

After reading the notes from previous council meetings I am left wondering if anyone has researched where traditional temples are situated and why they are situated in those locations?

Below are links to many Sikh temples around Ontario, BC and Quebec. Take note that each temple is located in commercial & industrial areas close to major arteries.

How is it that the Sikh Society’s influence is so great that it has the power to force Council to consider changing long standing zoning by-laws to build a very large structure that does not conform nor serve the immediate RESIDENTIAL community it is situated in? Having read the traffic study, I conclude it is not accurate to base it on traffic flow for the two existing temples in Guelph when it should have included studies of temples of similar size for a longer period of time to capture week day & nights and types of vehicles (ie: transport trailers during week days and nights). I forgot, this will be the second largest temple in Ontario and to find one of equal size will be difficult.

If you think there are tourist dollars to be gained from this venture, guess again. Should that be a valid argument, then situate the temple north of the city so the increased traffic it will generate will have to drive through Guelph with the hope those on pilgrimages stop to contribute to our community.

If this is approved and you find out you were miss-lead about it being built “only to support their 400 members for Sunday services”, it will be impossible to affect change afterward due to Human Rights complaints that will follow.

Please hear the concerns of the over-whelming majority of your electorate who do not want to disturb the tranquil environment of a well planned residential community.

Perhaps the Sikh Society should have hired their lawyer prior to purchasing the land instead of hiring a lawyer to tell Council what to do.

I appreciate the time of those who read my email. I look forward to sharing additional information with you as it becomes available. GU
