City landscapes

It is with increasing dismay as we drive around Guelph and see what an absolute mess the city properties are in – re weeds and dandelions. The City does not curb this problem and will not cut down the dandelions til they have “puffed” and spread their seedheads all over the place. They are not only an eyesore, but a nuisance to those homeowners who are trying to look after their properties. Most City poperties are so bad it’s disgusting !

And, with the City’s policy of no pesticide or weed spraying, there are a lot of homeowners who have given up the ghost (or never even tried) in maintaining their properties either. To live across the road from a rampant weed field (as my daughter does on her street) on a neighbour’s property is very daunting. Some of us take great pride in our property and don’t feel the City is doing enough to educate people, who are not totally up on gardening, on other ways and means to maintain their gardens.

The City should not have been so quick to cut everything re sprays out so completely without having an alternate method/s of property maintainance – also for it’s own lands.

The taxes we pay, I feel, are extremely high anyway – Guelph is well known in surrounding townships for it’s high tax grid – and to have to live across or beside a “weed dump” or even witness the mess on our travels around town is beyond a joke. Why should anyone have to pay $4,000 taxes to have their property brought down by a neighbour’s mess !!

I believe the council should be doing more in making Guelph – public and private properties – something to be proud of….not something that we wish we had a blindfold for !!             JD
