Cost Estimate for Pedestrian Bridge (Emma Street to Earl Street)

There has been some discussion in Ward 2 about an east west trail connection over the Speed River at Emma St. (see previous posting). Staff have now provided a cost estimate for this proposal. Please keep in mind that this is an estimated cost and that this project has not been identified in the Capitol budget.

Park Planning Staff have been in touch with a company who specializes in these bridges. They have provided an estimate for the bridge deck only of

$265,000.00. The estimate is based on these specifications:

The bridge design would be a 100m long multi-span – meaning there would be one vertical connection to the ground somewhere in the middle as well as the two end abutments.
The bridge itself would be a weathering steel (cor-ten steel) with a steel deck (all to code).

Please note that the estimate is for the bridge deck only and does not include:

The abutments (concrete) or the bridge anchoring bolts – all which have to be engineered and therefore can not be priced at this time.
Permitting, staging area for crane (base required on sodded areas), service locates, etc.
Engineering fees.

The estimate for the complete project will therefore be considerably higher and could approach the $400,000-500,000 range in today’s dollars.

We have not yet included this project in the 10 year capital forecast.   Staff
