Essex / Waterloo Street parkette

We are aware that a road has been proposed to be cut through the small park between Essex Street and Waterloo at the corner of Gordon Street in order to accommodate a large truck that occasionally uses the street. Apparently two large trees have already been removed to create a turnaround where Essex dead-ends at Gordon. Guelph Urban Forest Friends is very concerned about the additional loss of trees that will occur as a result of this road. Park land and trees are precious resources that belong to all citizens of the city. We ask that a public consultation be held with respect to the proposed road and that well prior to commencement of work on the project, the alignment of the road be clearly delineated with signs and that all trees slated for removal be clearly marked with signs so that the people who use and value this park are aware of the proposal.                         GUFF

This letter is further to a meeting held on July 16, 2007 at the park between Waterloo Avenue and Essex Street at which time a design review concept was presented by Engineering Services.

We appreciate the time and efforts the Engineering Services has put into finding the solution to the access and egress difficulties on Essex Street. It seems to me to be a somewhat viable solution, that is to install a roadway in the middle of the present parkland. It will certainly address the access and egress difficulties for Essex Street but at the same time it will require the removal of a very mature tree and the division of the park. Perhaps if the concept could be moved further to the east, then both trees could be saved. Another solution that would address all concerns would be to re-open Essex Street at the old entrance that was closed without notice. This should be considered as an option because Essex Street was closed without notice to the residents, businesses and landowners and because I do not believe the intersection was unsafe. What is most definitely unsafe is the present situation with trucks trying to negotiate Essex Street while delivering to businesses. One of our suppliers for engine oil has communicated to us how difficult his delivery here is now and that he must now back his truck up with vehicles parked on both sides of the roadway.                 PH
