Grade 10 student’s concerns about Guelph Transit

I find myself extremely disappointed with the recent developments in the transit system. The change from 30 to 40-minute intervals earlier this month created a huge problem for my daily transportation to and from school. With the newly implemented 40-minute intervals, there is only one bus in the morning between 8 and 9 AM that I can catch to get to school on time. One bus, and between all the students in Guelph that rely on city bus transportation, it’s not enough. A bus can only fit so many people, and often some unfortunate students are left standing at the closed doors to the bus watching it drive away. Not only that, but an excuse like, “I couldn’t fit on the bus,” isn’t considered valid when you end up late for school.
The proposition of doubling the bus frequencies from 40 to 20-minute intervals offers a solution to this and other problems. For one thing, it means that more buses would arrive between 8 and 9 AM and not everyone would be forced on one bus, therefore no one would get left behind. Additionally, increased intervals would allow flexibility and cater to more people, therefore increasing the amount of potential passengers. And, of course, more passengers means less cars on the road and a greener Guelph. I’m not alone in my beliefs that this month, the transit system became unreliable. I speak for myself and countless other students and Guelphites when I say that Guelph Transit needs the additional grant of money.            LV
