Guelph Public Library to promote conservation

Guelph residents who are concerned about energy conservation and environmental responsibility can now turn to the Guelph Public Library for help.

The Library has made an arrangement with Guelph Hydro Electric Systems Inc (GHESI) to promote and sell Earth Day Action Kits, provided by the utility.

The kits contain four premium compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs), toilet testing die tables to measure bathroom water usage, a water flow measurement device, and a brochure offering ten tips for home energy conservation.

The Library will sell the kits at the main headquarters branch downtown and all other branches, beginning the week of September 10.

Norman McLeod, chief librarian, said the kits will sell for $10 each including GST. The Library will donate all net proceeds from the sale to the Guelph Community Foundation.

“We are delighted to be able to work with Guelph Hydro to make these kits readily available to our patrons at a very minimal cost,” said McLeod, who noted that the savings generated by the CFLs alone would recover the initial cost for a kit “almost instantaneously”.

Art Stokman, president of GHESI, noted that the utility already partners with the Library on the loan of “Kill-A-Watt” meters through all branches. The meters help consumers to measure the electrical energy consumption of household appliances and devices.

“We applaud the Guelph Public Library for taking yet another decisive step towards promoting responsible energy use throughout Guelph, and we thank it for this partnership”, said Stokman.

Mr. McLeod said patrons should look for the Earth Day Action Kit display in each library branch starting the week of September 10.
