Guelph Solar Update – May 29th, 2008

First of all, welcome to our new members, we have about 100 more since the last update!

I hope this email finds you well, here is the latest update on the Guelph Solar Initiative. If you plan to save this to read later, please note that the call for volunteers to help with the Ecomarket display (this Saturday, May 31) is time sensitive. Thanks in advance to whomever can help!

Bulk Purchase Meeting, February 2008. Our bulk purchase meeting was well attended considering the inclement weather. Natural Power Products presented their bulk purchase solution, and 10 residents signed up to have their homes assessed for solar installations.

Solar Hot Water: Natural Power Products has kindly offered a bulk purchase price for solar hot water. Here are the details:

Solar Domestic Hot Water (SDHW) Systems

NPP has designed two SDHW systems to be offered to residential homeowners with 2 ½ storey residential buildings with a south facing sloped roof or 2 storey residential buildings with a flat roof. The SDHW systems are sized to provide approximately 50% of the year-round hot water requirements for a household of four people which is approximately 27,000 BTU’s/per day. The first SDHW system will utilize one 30 evacuated tube Apricus AP-30 solar collector to supply approximately 30,000 BTU’s/per day for the purpose of domestic hot water heating (DHW). The second SDHW system will utilize two Vitosol 100 flat plate solar collectors to supply approximately 30,000 + BTU’s/per day for the purpose of DHW. In addition, NPP will provide all mounting hardware, solar water pre-heat storage tank, heat exchanger, circulation pumps, control system, expansion tank, heat dissipator, and all required piping, insulation, and glycol solution.

• Apricus AP-30 SDHW system (South Facing Sloped Roof) = $13,171.39 installed.

• Apricus AP-30 SDHW system (Flat Roof Mount) = $13,441.27 installed.

• Viessmann Vitosol-100 SDHW system (Universal Mount) = $14,516.63 installed.

Please note that Guelph Solar has not sent out an official Request For Proposal to compare this price with comparable installations from other companies, we simply wish our membership to be aware of the offer should you be considering solar hot water at this time. Businesses take note! You are eligible for up to %25 of the installation cost through Ontario’s Solar Thermal Heating Incentive Program: http://www.energy.gov.on.ca/index.cfm?fuseaction=conservation.osthi.

City of Guelph Solar Purchasing Incentives: We have met with the City of Guelph, who have pledged to bring an incentive program to council to encourage residents to invest in solar technologies. The level of this incentive will be determined by budgetary considerations. We are going to ask that this incentive be retroactive to the beginning of this year, so that those who purchase now will be eligible. We will provide more information as it comes available.

Ecomarket: Guelph Solar will again have a table at the GEL Ecomarket this weekend. The Ecomarket will be this Saturday (May 31st) from 10am to 4pm. Come on out and check out the latest Green ideas in home and garden innovation! There will be over 30 exhibitors, including 2 presentations. 12 pm: Going Pesticide Free (Sean James) 2pm Endocrine Disrupters (Michael Gilbertson). We had had a volunteer have to cancel at the last minute, and still needed extra help, so if anyone wishes to volunteer a couple of hours for us let me know! (It is easy and fun – you do not need to be an expert!)

Solar on Schools: We are pleased to announce that the Upper Grand District School Board has approved plans to install solar panels on a new 2 classroom ‘Environmental Pack’ at Island Lake Public School in Orangeville. The new building will be constructed using straw bale and feature a variety of other green technologies.

Questions and comments are always appreciated, and as always please forward this on to anyone else you think might be interested!
