Library to help patrons power down

The Guelph Public Library, in association with Guelph Hydro Electric Systems Inc. will shortly begin a pilot project to help library patrons to measure and reduce their energy consumption.

The Library has acquired 12 Kill A Watt meters from the utility, which can be connected to household appliances to measure the energy they consume over given periods of time. This, in turn, helps households to identify appliances that are high energy users and choose to reduce their use or application.

Chief Librarian Norman McLeod said the meters, which are small, portable and come with easy to follow instructions, can be checked out of any of the library’s branches like regular books and other materials. Each comes with its own carrying case.

“We think there will be quite a demand for the meters, and we are very pleased to be among the first libraries in Ontario to become involved in a conservation project of this kind.

“We have a city-wide distribution system, so it makes sense for us to help Guelph Hydro test the use and application of this energy monitor.”

The library will launch the Kill A Watt project at a special ceremony at 11.00 am on Wednesday, May 16 at its Westminster Square branch at Gordon Street and Clair Road. The public is invited to attend.

Art Stokman, president of Guelph Hydro Electric Systems Inc. praised the library for the initiative.

“This is just another important example of how organizations in Guelph are stepping up to the plate when it comes to energy management,” he said.

“The Guelph Public Library is leading the way, and we hope many other organizations will follow.”
