Roundabouts on the Hanlon?

The Province of Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation (MTO) is undertaking an environmental  assessment (EA) of the Hanlon Expressway. As you may be aware, the Hanlon was originally designed to have overpass exchanges at each intersection. To date only the overpass at Wellington Street is complete. It was built in the late 1990’s at a cost of over 17 million dollars. Overpasses are a very expensive proposition.

One idea currently not being discussed for the Hanlon by the MTO is roundabouts. They are quite common in Europe and can move traffic through an intersection safely and quickly.

The cost to build roundabouts at all the major intersections on the Hanlon could be built for the price of one clover leaf!

The following web sites show just what is possible.
