Snow fall December 31, 2008

Just a quick note to bring everyone up to speed on our winter control activities.

We had what is called an Alberta Clipper fly through last night….these storms which originate in Alberta, (hence the name)… usually deposit 2 to 4 inches (5 to 10 cm) of snow depending on how fast they “clip” through. This one left us with 4 to 6 cm of accumulation. As you all know, our threshold for residential street plowing is 8cm, therefore we will not be plowing out the residential streets this time. We will service them with sand/salt as required on hills, curves and stop signs. We anticipate this servicing of the residential roads will be complete by 11;00pm tonight.

All of the Arterials and Collector Roads (includes bus routes) have been treated and plowed at least once and now that the snowfall has ended we will complete the cleanup of those roads and be transitioning into the residential roads and applying materials for traction.
Sidewalk plows were out at 5;00am and will complete the high and medium pedestrian volume routes, (excluding residential street sidewalks which has an accumulation threshold of 8cm) by 4;00pm today.
City owned steps will also be cleared by or before 4;00pm today.
Staff have been providing winter control services to city facilities since 5:00am and these areas should also be completed by or before 4;00pm today.

As always, your patience and co-operation is appreciated.

I wish you and yours a safe and prosperous new year……. Staff
