Tree Trimming in City Parks

I am writing to voice my concern with the tree trimming that has recently taken place in Riverside Park.

The following outlines my specific concerns:

1. I have been told that the trimming is related to security and safety concerns. Specifically, that the Police need a clear view thought the park and the conifers were occluding the view. Has there been a recent increase in crime in our parks? If so, have the conifers been sited as aiding and abetting the crimes? What data is there to support such extreme tree trimming activities?

2. I have also been told the trimming will make lawn cutting by City staff easier. I find this very confusing since prior to trimming there was no grass growing under the trees. That is, there was no need for lawn mowers to mow “under” the trees. Now, with threes trimmed as high as they have been, grass will certainly grow under the trees and will be required to be cut.

3. What are the implications for the naturalized areas of City parks? I am very concerned that, and I would be strongly opposed to this new tree trimming action will be applied to these areas.

4. What are the implications to homeowners with conifers that have branches that reach to the ground?     AW
