I am writing to ask you to oppose the expansion of the Wal-Mart. There is no need for a mega grocery store in the north end of town.
First, Wal-Mart already carries a full selection of foodstuffs. All they are really missing is fresh vegetables, and they could probably fit that into their current store if they really wanted to.
Second, there are several neighbourhood grocery stores already in the northern part of the city that would likely suffer or be forced to close if Wal-Mart is allowed to expand. These include:
Price Chopper on Speedvale & Stevenson
Zehrs on Eramosa
Food Basics on Eramosa
Food Basics on Silvercreek at Speedvale
No Frills on Silvercreek at WillowIt’s bad enough that Wal-Mart was allowed to develop in that inappropriate location in the first place. Please don’t exacerbate the problem by allowing Wal-Mart to more than double the size of their big box. Let’s work on getting downtown development on its feet before allowing a mega store that would cut smaller retail off at the knees. DS
