Woodlawn Extension to Highway 24?

Letter to Ward 2 Councillors with staff response. FYI

Can you tell me if there is any chance that the city will consider the extension of Woodlawn Rd to Hwy.24 now that all the new houses are being built on the east end of Woodlawn? I understand it has been on the planning board for a long time (over 20 years) but never gone anywhere. This would definitely help the traffic problems in the north corner of town which we all understand is a problem.      DG

The extension and connection of Woodlawn Road and Watson Road to Wellington Road 124 (old Hwy 24) has been identified since 1994 as a potential improvement to the road system in Northeast Guelph.

The most recent update, viz. the Guelph-Wellington Transportaion Study (2005) that addresses the 2001-2021 planning period, also identifies this potential improvement but with the qualification that it will not be required before 2021. The main reason for this is that while Watson-WR 124-Woodlawn will enhance the road connectivity in the area, in terms of projected traffic volumes in 2021 there will not be a significant need for this connection.

As this will be a new road and has to traverse sensitive natural environmental areas, it will be difficult to justify its need any time sooner based on projected traffic volumes.

I will also draw your attention to the City Website – to ‘transportation planning’ in the drop menu under living/planning & building. The Guelph-Wellington Study is listed there and the reference to Woodlawn-Watson connection is in Ch. 6 of the study, on p. 94.

For more information please call Mr. Geoffrey Keyworth, Transportation Palnner, at 519-837-5604, Ex. 2638, or myself at Ex. 2369.
Mr. Keyworth will be starting the next update of the Transportation Plan in 2008, and that update will identify the need for any change in our current assessment of the Watson-Woodlawn connection, if warranted by changes in landuse and travel patterns.
