Leash free fenced-in park in Guelph?

A constituent has recently written in requesting that a dedicated leash free fenced-in dog park be established in the City of Guelph. What do you think? Is there a need in Guelph for such an area? Where would it be located? Do the existing leash free areas suit the needs of dog owners? Are there conflicts with dog owners, joggers, cyclists and families in your park?

We are writing to ask you to consider our request to establish dedicated, fenced-in, leash-free dog run areas in Guelph.

Westminister Market Site Plan feedback

If you haven’t heard of it before, you will hear a lot about it in the future. It’s called the Commercial Policy Review (CPR) and it was approved by Guelph City Council in 2005. It is a blue print for four massive retail power centres (big box clusters) in the four corners of the City of Guelph. Although approved in principle, the site plans for each proposal are still to be approved by Guelph City Council.

Kathleen Farrelly to sit as Ward 1 Councillor

Further to Council’s direction April 2, 2007, the City Clerk has contacted Kathleen Farrelly, and can advise that Ms. Farrelly has consented to the appointment by Council to the vacant Ward 1 Councillor position.

A brief special meeting of Council immediately prior to the regular meeting on April 16th will take place, at which time Council will appoint Ms. Farrelly to fill the vacancy, and she can then be sworn in and commence her duties that evening.

Idling By-law

Councillors have received a number of requests to revisit the idling by-law in Guelph. One of the obstacles to this is the City operated buses idling in the downtown. There have been some complications to this as the buses need to run in order to operate doors and ventilation. Staff is working on this problem and a more formal response will be forthcoming. Below is a letter encouraging the City of Guelph to adopt a three minute idling by-law.

Hello,

With all the hype about Global Warming these days I was hoping that the City
of Guelph is working on lowering their idling by-law. Right now, the by-law
allows idling for 10 minutes. This should be reduced to well under 3
minutes.

Ingram Park on Simmons Drive

Guelph City Councillors receive a number of letters, phone calls and emails each day asking a variety of questions. Many of these inquiries may be of interest to other residents of Ward 2 and our city.

I was wondering what was going to happen with the park on Simmons Drive in the North end of Guelph? As a resident with two small children in this neighborhood, I would really like to see a play structure placed on the property as there is no play structures close by for residents in this new neighborhood.                        FT

For Whose Eyes Only? We say yours.

The City of Guelph Incentives Study was the final report by urbanMetrics, a Toronto based market, economic and strategic planning consulting firm. It was prepared for the Guelph Economic Development Department in December 2005 and has not been released to the public.

Executive Summary highlights include a blueprint for the City to increase tax revenue from the industrial base and residential development in the Downtown.

In essence, how can the City of Guelph make more money.

How to kill pests without killing yourself.

By far, the overwhelming number of letters received by council on the pesticide issue are supportive of a ban on the cosmetic use. This letter just in:

How to kill pests without killing yourself or the earth……

There are about 50 to 60 million insect species on earth – we have named only about 1 million and there are only about 1 thousand pest species – already over 50% of these thousand pests are already resistant to our volatile, dangerous, synthetic pesticide POISONS.

Wet Waste Presentation to CDES Committee

City Staff have made arrangements to have Peter Knecht from REO Energy Group available to make a short presentation to Council and the public immediately following the Community Development and Environmental Services Committee meeting on Thursday, April 5th, 2007. The CDES Committee meets from 9:30am till 1:00pm.

A Council motion was passed directing staff to release a “Request For Expressions of Interest” to explore options regarding proven technologies to divert wet waste from landfill.   Peter Knecht represents one technology that the City of Guelph may consider going forward for wet waste.  This will be an excellent opportunity to meet Mr. Knecht, who will be flying in from Europe.
